Cowley softball sweeps Coffeyville

By RAMA PEROO
Cowley College

The No. 8-ranked Cowley College softball team opened conference play with a bang as they run-ruled Coffeyville Community College in a pair of games played Tuesday at Lady Tiger Field.

Heather Davis struck out 10 in a 9-1, six inning win of game one. Jacey Juden allowed just one hit in an 11-0, five-inning win of game two.

"Knowing what kind of pitchers Heather and Jacey are, I anticipate that kind of performance every time we play," Cowley coach Ed Hargrove said.

In game one, Cowley led just 1-0 after three innings of play. However, Heather Davis' one-out triple keyed a four-run fourth inning that pushed the Lady Tigers' lead to 5-0.

Coffeyville's lone run would come on a solo homer by Lynsey Marvin leading off the fifth inning.

Cowley would add a run in the bottom of the fifth on a RBI single by Whitney Foust, and completed the run-rule with RBI singles from Kashilia Young, Danielle Saylor-Perkins and Jacey Juden in the bottom of the sixth.

Young went 3-for-4 with three RBI, while Foust went 2-for-2 with a RBI and a run scored. Davis allowed just two hits in improving to 6-0 on the season.

In game two, Cowley got a RBI single by Juden in the first inning and a solo home run by Young in the third inning to lead 2-0. The home run was Young's seventh in 12 games.

Cowley sent 12 batters to the plate and score nine times in the fourth inning. Breayle Tackett had a two-run double in the inning, while Sara Smith added a two-run single.

Juden struck out five in improving her record to 3-3 on the season. She also went 2-for-3 with a RBI and a run scored at the plate. Tackett finished with two hits and three RBI, while Colby Hart went 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.

Cowley out-hit Coffeyville 25-to-3 in the doubleheader as they improved to 9-3 overall and 2-0 in the Jayhawk East. The Lady Red Ravens are now 1-11 and 0-2 in the conference.

Cowley will play at Fort Scott Tuesday at 2 p.m. Fort Scott was picked last in the Jayhawk East, but split a doubleheader against Neosho County to open conference play.

"We won't overlook anybody," Hargrove said.
