Augusta man faces meth charge after arrest in Ark City
A 25-year-old Augusta man was arrested in Arkansas City on possession of methamphetamine, also known as meth on Tuesday.
An officer stopped a driver in a Pontiac Bonneville at around 2 a.m. for not dimming his headlights in city limits, according to Police Chief Sean Wallace.
The driver gave the officer an incorrect name, which identified him as a male under the age of 21. The officer noticed an open canister of beer in the backseat of the vehicle and the driver admitted to owning the alcohol.
While talking to the driver, the officer noticed a syringe on the floorboard of the car. When asked to get out of the car, the officer noticed a spoon, which can be used in the injection or inhalation of meth, in the man's back pocket.
The officer searched the car and discovered three bags of crystal meth, a digital scale, packaging items for drugs and several more bags with a white residue similar to what is left behind by meth.
After further investigation the officer identified the man as Thomas Gram Reynolds. He was arrested for possession of methamphetamine with intent to sell, possession of drug paraphernalia, no drug tax stamp, driving while suspended and obstruction of legal process or legal duty. His bond was set at $10,500.
While Wallace said that any drugs in Ark City are a "serious problem." He said meth has become less of an issue in recent years.
Wallace said that the police department is finding less meth labs, though they are finding more meth that has been imported into the county. This is partially due to the precursor law that was passed in 2005 requiring household drugs with chemicals like pseudoephedrine to be sold behind the counter. In the year after the law was passed, the amount of meth labs found in dropped from 390 in 2005 to 168 in 2006.
