Cowley baseball rises to 4-0

By RAMA PEROO
Cowley College

Pounding out 24 hits in its doubleheader against Highland Community College Tuesday at City Ball Park, the Cowley College baseball team picked up a pair of run-rule wins to improve to 4-0 in the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division.

"Yesterday was a big day for us, it was good to show we can play good two days in a row," Cowley assistant coach Darren Burroughs said.

Trailing 5-3 heading into the fifth inning of game one, the Tigers scored 10 runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth as they rallied for the 15-5 win. Andy Petz's three-run triple highlighted the 10-run fifth inning. Petz finished 3-for-3 with four RBI's and two runs scored.

Tyson Parks went 3-for-4 with a double, triple, and two runs scored. While, Tom O'Gorman went 3-for-5 with a RBI and three runs scored. Brice Cole homered in the win.

"We have the potential to score runs in bunches," Burroughs said.

After cruising through the first three innings, Cowley starting pitcher Curt Simpson allowed five runs in the fourth. Alex Schell (2-0) relieved Simpson on the mound and earned the win by allowing just one hit and no runs in two innings.

In game two, Highland scored a run in the top of the first inning off Tiger starter Chase Roten. However, Cowley answered with four runs in the bottom of the first. The Tigers would score two more runs in the second, two more in the third, and then finished the game with three runs in the fifth.

Roten (1-0) earned his first win of the season as he allowed one hit and one run in four innings pitched.

"Roten pitched really well," Burroughs said.

Zach Potter pitched a scoreless inning of relief. Cole went 2-for-3 with two doubles and three RBI's, while Kenny Hitchcock and Heath Wall added two hits apiece.

The Tigers are now 6-8 on the season. Cowley will be back in action Thursday when they play a doubleheader at Johnson County at 1 p.m.

Second Amendment
Does the Second Amendment guarantee an individual's right to own a gun, as the Supreme Court recently ruled?

Yes, that was the intent of the founding fathers.
No, the founders were only talking about militias.
It's still unclear.
