This year's Easter egg hunt planned for Saturday will be in a new location -- downtown. And there will be other activities for the little ones including a photo opportunity with the Easter Bunny.
Mayor Dotty Smith prompted the change to "spark some enthusiasm for spring," said Connie Kimsey, director of the Arkansas City Convention and Visitors Bureau.
"We've just expanded on what we did," Kimsey said today. "We always used to have the Easter egg hunt at Medicalodge North but this year we've moved it downtown."
The day's activities will kick off at Zeller Motors where kids can have their pictures taken with the Easter Bunny from 10 to 11:30 a.m.
Afterwards, activities pick up downtown where a karaoke led by Diana Keefe will begin at 12:30 p.m.
The Easter egg hunt will start at 2 p.m. Kids will gather at Ben Givens Center City Park at Central Avenue and Summit Street. The search will start there and encompass an area on the north side of Central to First Street.
Egg hunt contestants will be divided into four age categories -- 1-2, 3-4, 5-7, and 8-10. "Every egg in the hunt will be filled with surprises," Kimsey said.
There will be different areas to hunt for each age group, she said. The kids will scramble for thousands of plastic eggs with candy inside them.
"We donated 300 coupons for free vanilla ice cream or kiddie drinks," said Jeremy Weaver, manager of the Sonic Drive-In on North Summit Street. "They're going to hide those in the eggs."
Sonic is one of several sponsors for the event, billed as Spring Extravaganza. Others include the Arkansas City Recreation Center, Medicalodges of Arkansas City, Ark City Chamber of Commerce, Mayor Smith, Ark City Jaycees, Keefe Printing, Wendy's, McDonald's, Paris Park Pool and "The Rec" Game Room.
"Wander downtown to join in the fun with games for the kids and tasty treats provided by street vendors," Kimsey said.
Face-painting will be among the activities, she said.
