One and done for Southwestern at nationals

SIOUX CITY, Iowa -- Shooting well from the field, the Davenport (Mich.) Panthers handed Southwestern a 76-66 season-ending loss on Wednesday morning at the Tyson Events Center.
Five Moundbuilder seniors played their last game on a national level: Kinsey Colclasure, Courtney Gandy, Caylin Larsen, Jenna Wilson and Kara Beal.
"It's very fitting for them to end their career as seniors on this floor in this atmosphere," Southwestern College said Dave Denly said. "This is a very special group."
After the game, Denly told the underclassmen to be thankful for the experience. "We expect to be right back here next year. We have a great nucleus. Tylar had a tremendous game today. Bailey's been getting better."
The Moundbuilders finished the season 23-8.
Davenport improved to 28-5 and plays the Concordia (Neb.)-Union,
(Ky.) winner at 8:30 a.m. Friday.
In one of the timeouts called in the first half, Southwestern refocused and aimed to get stops on defense.
And they did.
Southwestern scored seven straight points with four minutes remaining in the first half, including a three-pointer by Colclasure, a basket by Hartfield and a two-pointer from Beal.
But that run didn't last long.
"We ran out of gas a little bit. I was hoping to get that deficit down to around 10 at halftime to give us a chance," said Denly. "But unfortunately it was at 19. It was almost too much to overcome."
Davenport led 49-30 at halftime.
The Panthers shot over 58 percent from the field and over 53 percent from the three-point line.
Jeanette Woodberry scored 17 of her 25 points in the first half to lead Davenport.
Three other Panthers finished in double digits. Kristi Boehm had 13 points. Lyndsey Shepherd and Brittany Lyman each added 11.
Southwestern shot 33 percent from the field and 19 percent from the three-point line. Jenna Wilson and Tylar Hartfield led the team with 17 points apiece. Kinsey Colclasure added 12.
Denly said Davenport was a tough team to face.
"They're very athletic. They're well drilled. They shoot the ball extremely well," he said.
The focus now is on recruiting. The team has already started scouting players at games, and Denly said a few have visited campus.
"We're going to go full-force for the next month or so to get it wrapped up," Denly said.
He added the overall character of the team is something he's proud of.
"They're great young ladies. I'm very proud to be in this position," Denly said.
