Poljansek ties school record in discus

Five days after winning NJCAA National Indoor track and field titles, David Starnes and Kelsey Poljansek started the outdoor season on top.

Starnes, who won the NJCAA national indoor pole vault title, won the event during Thursday's outdoor season opener at Southwestern College, clearing a height of 15 feet. That also qualified him for the NJCAA National Outdoor Championships May 15-17 in Levelland, Texas.

"There was a cross wind and that's not real prime pole vault jumping (conditions)," Cowley coach Mark Phillips said. "But he still jumped really well."

Poljansek, who won the NJCAA national indoor shot put title, broke the Southwestern Invite meet and tied the school record in the discus, hitting a national- qualifying throw of 154 feet, two inches. She also qualified for nationals in the shot put, throwing a winning distance of 46 feet, six inches.

Poljansek's mark in the discus was the same distance she threw to win the title in last year's outdoor national meet.

"Real good start there," Phillips said.

Nate Newland, meanwhile, won the men's 1,500-meter run in a time of 4 minutes, 6.36 seconds. Adam Wolkins won the men's javelin throw, hitting a national meet qualifying distance of 203 feet, 5 inches.

Cowley competed with a partial squad on Thursday, garnering 18 top-five finishes.

"Five days after competing at nationals, this is considered our down time," Phillips said. "We had some real good performances. I was pleased with the kids that competed."
