When Heath Wall stepped to the plate in the fourth inning in the second game of Thursday's doubleheader, Cowley had already scored three runs and was looking for more.
Wall hit a bullet off the glove of Coffeyville pitcher JR Boling, and the ball rolled into left field, scoring two more runs en route to a nine-run inning for the Tigers.
That was just a sign of how well the ball has bounced in Cowley's favor, lately.
For the first time all season, the Tigers, ranked 10th nationally, moved above the .500-mark following a sweep of Coffeyville on a warm, but blustery day at City Ball Park. Cowley won game one 8-1 and game two 14-4 in a six-inning run-rule, improving to 11-9 overall and 9-1 in Jayhawk East play.
When Cowley started the season 2-8, assistant coach Darren Burroughs wasn't concerned. He knew that it was going to take time. It was just a matter of all the pieces coming together.
"We knew that it was going to happen at some point," Burroughs said. "We just knew that we had to get on the field and get some consistency going."
Curt Simpson put on a dominating performance in game one, allowing only two hits and one run in five innings of work.
"Outstanding outing," Burroughs said. "Outstanding job by Curt. He got better as he went. He had a high pitch count early and got better as he went."
Simpson's bid for a no-hitter was broken up in the third. Cody Buchanan hit an RBI double to cut Cowley's lead to 4-1.
Coffeyville had a chance to slice Cowley's lead in the fourth inning. With the aid of the prevailing wind, Matt Dahms hit a one-out double over the head of Colt Loehrs in the fourth. Loehrs made up for that gaffe, saving a run on a diving catch to end the inning to keep Cowley's three-run cushion intact.
Heath Wall took advantage of the blowing winds, hitting his first two home runs on the season in game one.
After the Tigers took advantage of a Coffeyville error in the first for a 1-0 lead, Wall hit a two-run home run in the second for a 3-0 lead.
Wall capped off his 3-for-3 outing with a solo home run to straight-away centerfield in the fifth for a 5-1 Cowley lead. He finished 4-for-6 in the doubleheader.
"He's been working really hard at the plate," Burroughs said. "He's starting to get a feel of what he wants to do all the time. It's just a tribute to him because all of the hard work is paying off for him."
Jake Mitcheltree took the loss for Coffeyville in game one, allowing five runs and 10 hits in five innings. Chris Linneman threw the final two innings.
Tom O'Gorman capped off the win with a two-run single in the sixth. John Chaisson went 3-for-4 in game one.
Things didn't start off on the right foot for the Tigers in game two, as Coffeyville used three hits to take a 1-0 lead in the first.
Both teams then exchanged leads on separate three-run innings.
In the bottom of the third, Chaisson got Cowley on the board with an RBI single. Two batters later, Tyson Parks received a good bounce on a ground ball for an RBI single. O'Gorman capped off the inning with a bloop double down the right field line for a 3-1 Tigers lead.
That lead was short-lived -- at least, temporarily.
Brandon Elmore chased Cowley starter Chase Roten from the game after regaining a 4-3 lead for Coffeyville in the fourth on an RBI single up the middle. Roten struggled in his outing, allowing seven hits and four runs in 3 2/3 innings.
Chris O'Brien prevented any further damage, allowing only two hits in 2 1/3 innings to pick up the win in relief of Roten.
Cowley has shown flashes of its ability to score runs in bunches, including a 10-run inning against Highland on March 11.
On Thursday, a nine-run fourth inning allowed the Tigers to seize control and cruise to their ninth win in the last 10 games.
Cowley sent 12 batters to the plate in the fourth inning, scoring nine runs on five hits. It also drew three walks in the inning, with Chaisson starting the scoring on a bases-loaded walk.
Chaisson's walk chased Coffeyville starter Corey White (3 1/3 innings, eight hits, six runs) from the game. That was only the beginning of a long inning for Coffeyville, as the Tigers proceeded to open the floodgates.
Luke Zeller capped off the inning with a hard liner to right field. The ball was misplayed by Brandon Cox, and Zeller made it all the way to third base on the error, in which two runs scored. He went 3-for-4 in game two.
"We have a lot of guys who can swing the bat," Wall said. "Nobody's too selfish, they always want to help out the team."
Coffeyville (4-10, 4-6 Jayhawk East) could only watch on in disbelief, stunned by what had transpired during the inning. Zeller capped off the scoring, as he scored on a balk by Boling for a 12-4 Tigers lead.
Brice Cole ended the doubleheader with a two-run single in the sixth, due to the 10-run mercy rule.
Cowley pounded out 26 hits in the sweep.
"It's just a sign of somebody that's doing the right things and luck was on our side today," Wall said. "We can score runs, just like you saw today."
