Johnson, Posey make state trek

By MATT PARCHER

Arkansas City tennis seniors, Ron Posey and Jeremiah Johnson placed second at regionals held in Winfield last Thursday, qualifying them to compete for a doubles state championship in their first state tournament appearance.

Many things will have to go right for the duo to be successful at such a tournament. "They have to have a high first serve percentage," said head tennis coach Aaron O'Donnell. "They'll just have to play high-percentage tennis."

In the quarter finals of Thursday's regional, the tandem looked impressive, taking care of Kapaun 6-1, 6-0. Their next match, which was against rival Winfield, was also made short work of, producing two more wins by scores of 6-3, 6-2.

"Ron and Jeremiah are very excited about state," O'Donnell said. "They're not content to just be there. They hope to place in the top 10.

In order to do this they will have to win at least two matches.

The doubles duo has contributed a lot to the Ark City high school tennis program besides wins. "I've had them both since they were in middle school," O'Donnell said. "They're very coachable and they both listen and work. They've been very enjoyable to coach."

They will compete at the state tournament on May 9-10 at the Riverside Tennis Center in Wichita.
