Many folks took photographs of their favorite spots in Cowley County this past year so that they might enter the second annual photo/essay contest to celebrate National Tourism Week and to Celebrate Cowley County.

There were 18 entries submitted this year, which included one in the Elementary School Category; one in the High School Category; Six in the Adult Category; and eight in the Junior High Category.

Because there were not enough entries in the Elementary or High School categories, no judging took place for those entries.

James Jordan, managing editor of the Traveler, along with Judith Zaccaria, lifestyles editor and copy editor of The Winfield Daily Courier, and Tara Drake, a photographer and writer, were the judges for this year's contest.

With pencils in hand and calculators at the ready, these worthy individuals appointed their determined amount of points for each submission for each criterion.

The following individuals won in the Adult Category:

First place - Larry Hahn, from Winfield. The title of his photo/essay is "Beauty and Strength in Connectedness;" second place - CJ Lockhart, from Burden. The title of this photo/essay is "Cambridge, KS Railroad at Sunset. And 3rd place - Joyce Bloyer from Winfield. The title of her photo/essay is "The Road Back Home.'

The winners for the "Junior High" category are: First place - Madeline True, from Arkansas City. The title of Madeline's photo/essay is "Tannehill Cemetery;" second place - Tucker Davis, from Ark City. The title of his photo/essay is "What We See;" and third place - Brooke Jackson, from Ark City. The photo/essay title for this one is "The Spring Creek."

The photographs and accompanying essays are on display at the Arkansas City Chamber of Commerce. Be sure to stop by and see the work of our county's talented artists.

What a great way to celebrate National Tourism Week. The photographs taken and essays written are true gem creations for the Celebration of Cowley County. So get your cameras ready; start capturing those photo ops now for next year's contest.

For information on next year's contest contact Arkansas City CVB Director at (620) 442-0236 or Winfield's Convention & Tourism Director at (620) 221-2420.
