Goodwin makes official her run for re-election
Sen. Greta Goodwin, D-Winfield, announced that she has filed for a new term in the Kansas Senate serving the 32nd District.
Goodwin served in the Kansas House of Representatives for two terms before being elected to the Kansas Senate in 1996.
"It is an honor to serve the people of the 32nd District in the Legislature," she said. "As a lifelong resident of Cowley County, l will continue to work hard to represent the values and principles important to rural Kansas."
During her three terms in the Kansas Senate, Goodwin has been an advocate for veterans issues. In 1997, she drafted and sponsored a bill allowing a new veterans home to be built in Winfield. "Our state must put more emphasis on mental and health care policies as more veterans are returning home needing special medical treatment. As your state senator, I will continue working to improve benefits for Kansas veterans and active duty military personnel," Goodwin said in a press release.
As ranking member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Goodwin supported passage of nationally recognized parole reform. "The innovative parole program uses new, smarter ways to manage our prison population while reducing violations and re-incarceration rates," she said. "The program has been such a success that Kansas has been able to postpone building new prisons for an estimated 10 years."
In 2006, Sen. Goodwin promoted a three-year public school finance plan. This year, she helped extend the plan for a fourth year. "The historic investment we approved in 2006 has already helped improve the quality of education for hundreds of public school children in our community by addressing special education, bilingual education, and at-risk programs," she said. "By extending the school finance plan for a fourth year, we can continue to address the educational needs of rural schools and help our local district plan for the future."
Sen. Goodwin is the ranking minority member on the Senate Judiciary, Joint Corrections and Juvenile Justice Oversight, and Joint State Building Construction committees. She also serves as a member of the Ways and Means Committee, the Transportation Committee, the Confirmation Oversight Committee, the Public Finance Transparency Board, the Kansas Sentencing Committee, the Judicial Council Probate Law Advisory Committee, the Judicial Council Juvenile Offender Advisory Committee and the Child Support Guidelines Advisory Committee.
In addition to her legislative duties, Goodwin also serves on the boards of the Kansas Department of Corrections, Winfield Community Relations, as well as council member of the Reach Preschool Developmental Center.
She attended both Cowley County Community College and Wichita State University before earning national certification as a legal assistant. Goodwin worked in the banking industry for nearly 15 years and 22 years in the legal profession.
Goodwin and her husband, Jim, have been married for more than 40 years and are the parents of four children and nine grandchildren.
