Storm dumped water, no tornadoes spotted
Thunderstorms and high winds struck the Arkansas City area Thursday night, but thankfully no tornadoes were reported in this area, a city official said today.
It looks like pleasant weather for the weekend, hot an humid, said Bob Frazee, emergency management coordinator for Ark City.
"The next best chance for rain will be late Sunday afternoon through Sunday night," Frazee said.
Ark City does not need any more rain now, he added. "We're saturated."
The city received 2.63 inches of rain Thursday night, he said. Other area rainfall totals: Strother Field, 2.44 inches; Winfield, 1.96 inches; Oxford, 1.75 inches.
Wind gusts of 60 miles per hour were reported in the Ark City area between 7 and 8 p. m., Frazee said.
There was flooding in several areas of town: Eighth Street south of Chestnut Avenue, Paris Park, and North C Street.
"The East Madison Underpass had a foot of water in it for awhile," Frazee said. Flooded areas were barricaded, but barricades were removed by 1:30 a.m. today, he said.
