Relay for Life moved to Agri-Business building

With all the recent rain, officials with the Cowley County Relay for Life have decided to hold their event in the Agri-Business building this year. It is usually held at the Cowley College track and the Agri-Business building has served as a backup.

The relay begins at 6 p.m. Friday and goes until 6 a.m. Saturday.

The Relay for Life raises money for cancer research, and seeks to honor cancer patients as well as raise awareness of the disease.

Honorary 2008 chairpersons are Cory Helmer, of Winfield, and Jasighia Killman, of Dexter.

The Luminary Party has been changed to the Agri-Business Building at 5:30 p.m. today. Luminaries will be assembled and placed around the walking path tonight in order to expedite the luminary-bag event Friday. Luminaries are sold in memory of people who have died from cancer for $10.

Opening ceremonies are set to begin at 7 p.m. Friday followed by the survivor lap with caregivers meeting survivors halfway around the track. The popular luminary ceremony, which lights the way for Relay for Life with luminaria decorated with the names of cancer survivors and those who have lost the battle, will be at 10 p.m. Luminaries in memory or in honor of a cancer survivor may be purchased until 9 p.m. for a donation of $10.

After the luminary ceremony, the Visual Truth Mime Troupe directed by Mark Bloyer will perform. Surrender to Farewell Band will follow from 12:30-2 a.m. The closing ceremony will be at approximately 6 a.m.

Bidding for silent auction items featuring goodie baskets, Nascar tickets and two Air Tran tickets to anywhere in the US, along with many other items will be held from 6-10 p.m. A concession stand will be available throughout the evening.

Schedule of events for Friday:

8 p.m., Hula-Hoop contest

8:30 p.m, Decorate a hat (while supplies last)

8:30-10 p.m. The Howlerz Band

10 p.m., Luminary ceremony

10-midnight, Limbo contest, three-legged race, sack race

12:30-2 a.m., Surrender to Farewell Band

1-5 a.m., Scavenger hunt

Prizes will be awarded to game participants.

All proceeds from the Relay For Life activities will go to the American Cancer Society and help fund programs and research in Cowley County.

For more information or to purchase a luminaria, call (620) 441-0096, or (620) 221-1120.
