NEWKIRK -- Authorities were still searching late Friday night for one of two Kay County inmates who escaped Monday night, a sheriff's department spokesperson said.
At large is Darrin Muegge of Tonkawa, who previously escaped and was recaptured earlier this month.
The two escapees included Muegge, 40, who was incarcerated for manufacturing of methamphetamine, possession of controlled dangerous substances, possession of marijuana, and possession of paraphernalia.
The other was Terrance Cottingham, 18, of Pawhuska. Cottingham is in jail for 2nd degree burglary and possession of stolen property.
Cottingham was apprehended Wednesday in Ponca City.
Kay County Undersheriff Steve Kelley said the two men escaped between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. but were not found missing until approximately 12:30 a.m.
Kelley said the two men used a metal plate that covers the lid where food trays are moved into the cell and used that lid to disarm an inside door and then pried open a north fire escape door. Other escapes from the jail have been through a south emergency door.
Kelley said that a Newkirk police officer had noticed a man near the jail perimeter and at that point it was noticed that the outside door was open.
Newkirk Police Chief John Hobbs said Tuesday that officer Kevin Main chased the suspect, who was allegedly trying to smuggle contraband into the jail after the escape by the two inmates.
The suspect was arrested and charged with public intoxication, possession of marijuana, and obstructing an officer.
