Couple gets July 4th surprise

By FOSS FARRAR

Elisha Ybarra got an unexpected Fourth of July surprise and it had nothing to do with fireworks.

"Instead of shooting off firecrackers we had a firecracker," Ybarra said Monday at her Arkansas City home.

She indicated her 3-day-old son who rested in a nearby crib. "He's our little firecracker."

Ybarra gave birth to Justice Lee Ybarra at 11:12 p.m. last Friday, several days before planned, she said. Justice was 8 pounds, 1 1/2 ounce and 20 inches long at birth.

The baby was delivered by Winfield Dr. Kent Winblad. Elisha's husband, Jesse, was allowed to assist the doctor, he said.

Justice is believed to be the only baby in Cowley County who was born this year on July 4.

The Ybarras gained recognition four years ago when they became parents of the first baby born in the county in 2004. That baby, Mason Dean, was born on Jan. 2, 2004, in Winfield. He is now a healthy four-year-old.

The couple now has four children -- two boys and two girls -- ages 12, 4, 2 and the newborn.

On Friday evening, the family was just starting to celebrate with friends at a barbecue when Elisha started into labor.

"We had just gotten to friends' house in Geuda Springs when my water broke," Elisha said. "It was pretty shocking."

Ybarra said she had been scheduled to be induced into labor on Monday.

"I was just getting ready to start sampling the food," Jesse Ybarra said.

The kids were preparing to swim at an outdoor pool, added Elisha.

But their plans were cut short.

"I just ran outside, collected the kids and off we go," Jesse said.

Elisha, a native of Udall, and Jesse, a Lamar, Colo., native, moved to Ark City several years ago. Jesse is a DJ at KSOK Radio.
