Kay County Jail escapee caught without incident
Kay County Jail escapee Darrin Deewayne Muegge was captured without incident Monday morning by Ponca City police and is currently in the Ponca City Jail.
Muegge escaped from the Kay County Jail on June 23, the second time he had escaped the facility. Muegge had previously escaped from the jail facility June 5 and was recaptured two days later in Ponca City.
He was arrested after a traffic stop near 1st and Broadway in Ponca City at 8:10 a.m.
Muegge was charged with escape as well as possession of a controlled dangerous substance and drug paraphernalia, according to Sherry Bowers, spokeswoman for the Ponca City Police Department.
Also arrested was a 17-year old female juvenile. She was arrested for harboring a fugitive, no driver's license, no insurance, and expired tag. Another 17-year old female was in the vehicle but was released to the custody of her parents without charges.
Bowers said that Sgt. Jason Filtz spotted Muegge in the back seat of a turquoise Chevrolet Camaro, allegedly driven by Muegge's 17-year old daughter.
Filtz was on his way home from an overnight shift when he saw the vehicle and after calling for officer assistance, pulled the vehicle over and then arrested Muegge.
The Kay County Sheriff's Department had received information that Muegge had been in Tulsa and was coming back to the Ponca City area in his daughter's vehicle.
The description of the vehicle was then relayed to all area law enforcement agencies.
Kay County Undersheriff Steve Kelley said Monday morning the department is preparing for Muegge's return to the Kay County facility.
"We have been in contact with the State Health Department to find out exactly what we can do legally to keep him locked up," Kelley said. "He will be under 23 hour lock down."
Kelley said the information received by the county Sunday night proved to be correct.
"The tip we received on Sunday was right on," Kelley said of the tip that led to Muegge's arrest.
The undersheriff reported that another nine circuit boards were replaced over the weekend causing malfunctions on the internal prison doors.
"I bet we have replaced 40-50 of these boards," he said.
Kelley added that a shakedown of Kay County prisoners Sunday looking for wires used by the inmates to short circuit the light fixtures in the cells.
"We don't know if that is causing the problems with the circuit boards but it's possible," Kelley said.
Sheriff Everette Van Hoesen said Monday morning that the new Kay County jail will not have lights inside the jail cells.
Muegge, along with fellow inmate Terrance Counterman, escaped through a jail auxiliary door that has since been welded shut. Counterman was arrested in Ponca City two days after the June 23 escape.
