Ark City police involved in two chases
Ark City police were kept busy over the weekend in two separate cases involving pursuits.
The first one occurred Saturday evening when officers spotted James Jay McDonald, 30, of Arkansas City, riding a bicycle in the 700 block of North Seventh.
The officers thought McDonald looked familiar and a computer check confirmed that he was wanted on a municipal warrant. When officers approached him and attempted to handcuff him, there was a scuffle in which one of the officers received a broken finger.
At one point, McDonald broke free and attempted to flee on foot. Officers caught up to him two blocks later and took him into custody. McDonald was arrested and charged with escape from custody, resisting arrest, and failure to appear, a charge that stemmed from the original bench warrant.
The second incident, involving reckless driving, occurred Sunday in the 1100 block of North Fifth.
Officers attempted to stop a vehicle driven by James Robert Sparks, 33, of Arkansas City. The officers were responding to a call from another motorist who had witnessed the Sparks' vehicle strike several curbs.
Sparks eluded officers for two blocks before he lost control of his vehicle and hit a curb head-on. Sparks was arrested and charged with his fourth offense for driving under the influence of alcohol, obstructing official duties, eluding in a vehicle, and reckless driving. No serious injuries were reported.
