Oklahoma tennis stars headed to Cowley

By The Traveler

Two high school tennis standouts from Oklahoma have signed letters of intent to play for Larry Grose at Cowley County Community College. Jon Holland of Jenks and Collin Torrence of Broken Arrow are set to become Tigers this fall.

Holland, the son of Laura and Bob Holland of Jenks, and his doubles partner won the Class 5A state championship at No. 1 flight, posting a perfect 35-0 record this past season. Holland was rated the No. 1 doubles player in the Oklahoma District Tennis Association for boys 18 years of age. He was selected to the 2002 Oklahoma All-State Team and will be playing on the East Squad.

He is a Jim Thorpe nominee by the Oklahoma Coaches Association for player of the year in tennis.

He is a 2002 graduate of Jenks High School and was an honor student this past spring. He is active in Fellowship of Christian Athletes and is a member of the First Baptist Church of Jenks.

Torrence finished fourth in the state at No. 2 singles and also was chosen to represent the East in the McDonald's All-State Games.

He was fifth at No. 2 singles his junior year. He lettered in tennis all four years of high school.

His sophomore season, Torrence and his playing partner were runners up at No. 2 doubles.

As a junior, he was asked to participate in the leadership class at Broken Arrow High School. He served on the Junior Board, DECA, Making Youth Today,s Heroes, Junior Achievement, and Leadership Lock-In. As a senior, Torrence was selected by his teachers to be a member of Colabash, a leadership club that met monthly with the principal and other school leaders.

He continued in MYTH, DECA, and again participated in the Leadership Lock-In.

Torrence has spent the last two summers working with mentally and physically impaired youth at a day camp sponsored by the Tulsa Parks and Recreation Department.
