The Arkansas City Board of Education reelected Joe Woodard as president and Joelyn Squires as vice president at its annual reorganization meeting Monday night. They will remain in their positions for another year.
The 7-member board also appointed representatives from its members to sit with various school groups: Head Start Council, Tim Harmon; ACE Fund, Janet Carroll, with Mike Walker as alternate; insurance/benefits committee, Squires; supplementary salary committee, Walker.
In a routine meeting, the board also set a calendar of dates for school board meetings during the next school year -- generally to be held at 7 p.m. on the second and fourth Mondays of each month.
The board adopted a 1,116-hour school year for 2008-09.
In other action, the board:
* Approved a bid from Wells Construction, Arkansas City, of $17,142 to install a replacement septic system at IXL Elementary School.
"Brian Wells says he can be on-site and begin work this Friday," said USD 470 Superintendent Ron Ballard. Wells is owner of the construction company.
Ballard estimated the work could be done within a two-week period including grading work. Smith & Oakes Inc., a local engineering firm, did the design work on the new system, he said.
* Scheduled a special board meeting for next week -- next Monday and Tuesday -- for the board to hear proposals by construction management firms vying for the job of overseeing work in the school district's $35.8 million schools renovation project. The meetings will begin at 5:15 p.m. both evenings. After all proposals are heard, the board will choose a construction management company for the job.
* Approved the purchase of Alexandria library automation software and hardware with first year costs not to exceed $42,779. It is a Web browser-based circulation system.
* Approved a food service program agreement authorizing USD 470 to continue its school food services program.
* Approved student meal prices for the 2008-09 school year at the current price. Assistant Superintendent J.K. Campbell said that prior to the 2005 fiscal year the board approved a 10 cent rate increase for breakfast and lunch meal fees, but the district is able to maintain current prices for another year.
* Authorized a food service contract for Sacred Heart Catholic School for next year.
