Cheerleaders, more than fans in AC
The Ark City High School Varsity and Junior Varsity cheerleaders attended Universal Cheerleaders Association summer cheer camp on July 7-10 at Emporia State University.
The cheerleaders were taught new, cutting edge material for crowd involvement, stunts, sideline cheers and chants, dances, and competed in nightly evaluations as well as the Camp Championship on the final day. Along with learning new material from UCA instructors, the ACHS cheer squads also competed in the Home Routine on the first night of camp, which consisted of a dance routine that was learned before attending camp.
The Varsity squad earned the following awards during nightly evaluations: Superior ribbons for Sideline Chant, Sideline Cheer, Extreme Routine and Final Evaluations.
In the Varsity Division Ark City Varsity cheer squad earned a Superior Squad award for leadership, talent and positive attitude. They were also crowed Camp Champs in the Varsity division for their Extreme Routine.
Varsity cheer squad members are seniors Carissa Speck, Captain, Jordan Williams and Chelsea Weathers. The juniors are Shailene Moya, Alyssa Zimmerman, Heather Sayre and Haylee Roberts. Holli Rowe is the only freshman.
The Junior Varsity squads earned the following awards during nightly evaluations: Ribbons of Excellence for Sideline Chant, and Extreme Routine and Superior ribbons for Sideline Cheer and Final Evaluations.
In the junior varsity division Ark City JV cheer squad received the Camp Improvement Award and placed first in the Home Routine.
Junior Varsity cheer squad members are Senior Britnay White, Co-Captain, junior Megan Metzinger, sophomores Ingrid Torres, and Jessica O'Donnell and freshmen Megan Salas,Co-Captain, Molly Siebert, Chyenne Monroe and Tiffany Pearsio.
Three members of the Ark City cheer squads earned individual honors.
Freshman Megan Salas was crowned Jump Queen in the Sophomore and below division, while Senior Carissa Speck was crowned Jump Queen in the Junior and above division.
Carissa was also selected as a UCA All-Star cheerleader. This prestigious award is awarded to those cheerleaders who have superior cheerleading skills.
All-Star cheerleaders had to tryout and then were selected by the UCA camp staff. Only about 10 percent of campers are selected as All-Stars. Speck has earned the right to represent UCA in London, England in January of 2009.
The Ark City cheer squads are coached by Head Coach Brandi Wegner and assistants Jocelyn Corley and Peggy Soule.
