Online Extra - Body found near river

Police have identified a body found near the Arkansas River this morning as that of Timothy A. McKay, a Winfield man who was reported missing Monday evening, according to a press release.

The press release reads as follows:

"On the evening of July 21, 2008, officers with the Winfield Police Department received a report of a missing person identified as Timothy A. McKay, 58.

"According to the report, he had not been seen by family members since Saturday, July 19, 2008. The Winfield Police Department notified surrounding agencies requesting assistance in looking for Mr. McKay.

"While on patrol, Deputy Tristan Chalmers of the Cowley County Sheriff's Department located a vehicle registered to Mr. McKay at approximately 12:00 a.m. on the morning of July 22, 2008. The vehicle was located on 322nd Road on an area of Kaw Wildlife area next to the Arkansas River.

"The tracking team comprised of members of the Kansas Highway Patrol, Arkansas City Fire and Burden Fire were called to the scene and searched throughout the night.

"At approximately 6:00 a.m. trackers located the body of Timothy A. McKay. Mr. McKay was deceased.

"The cause of death was determined to be an apparent self-inflicted gun shot wound."

According to the City of Winfield's online staff directory, McKay was a wastewater system foreman.
