Free family movie downtown tonight

By FOSS FARRAR
Traveler Staff Writer

Tonight's free movie that will be shown outdoors in downtown Arkansas City is "Horton Hears a Who!" a Dr. Seuss flick starring Jim Carey, sponsors of the event said.

The movie will be shown at dusk, 9 p.m., on Fifth Avenue between Summit and A Street, Mayor Mell Kuhn and a U.S. Cellular employee said. The event is part of Ark City's first Summer Olympics that starts tonight and continues through Saturday. It also is being held in conjunction with National Night Out Kick-Off, also tonight. Popcorn, pizza and bottled water will be served to movie goers.

"We've done this in Manhattan (Kan.) and Hutchinson and are getting better at it every time," said Jeff Burmeister, of U.S. Cellular, which is sponsoring the movie.

Burmeister spoke as the sound system for the movie was being tested on Fifth Avenue late this afternoon.

"We'd love to do this for a month straight in a community."

Kuhn suggested that Burmeister and the City of Ark City might look into having a month of movies at the Wilson Park Rotunda.
