Lady 'Dawgs help keep Winfield winless

WINFIELD -- The Arkansas City High School volleyball team has been playing grueling, overtime matches almost since the season began. Tuesday night at the Winfield triangular was no exception.

The Lady Bulldogs lost in three games to Haysville-Campus 25-22, 23-25, 25-19 and needed overtime against the archrival Lady Vikings, but did not need a third game in defeating Winfield 26-24, 27-25.

"Six matches in a row we've gone to that third game. We've got to get out of that," ACHS coach Rhonda Hollis said. "We've got to quit giving teams the confidence to play with us, and take care of business a little bit better."

Campus made it a clean sweep in the Ark Valley Chisolm Trail League triangular, defeating Winfield 28-26, 25-23.

The Lady Bulldogs are 4-14, 1-2 in AVCTL play. The Lady Colts improved to 5-11, 3-2, while the winless Vikings dropped to 0-16, 0-3.

That the Bulldogs stayed with Campus made the loss all the more disappointing. The first game was tied as late as 15-15, but Ark City couldn't take advantage of back-to-back service errors by the Colts as Campus pulled away.

Bevin Swope reeled off three straight service winners as the Bulldogs fought off three game points, but Kayla Claphan, who registered 22 assists for Campus in the match, dropped a set over the net on the fourth game point for the win.

"I think we're just on the verge of being good, and it's a little scary to some of them to win," Hollis said. "We've got to get past that."

The Bulldogs relied on the strength of their serving to take the second game, as Taylor Hatfield capped a 6-0 start with a pair of aces. Nicole Fiorentino, Taylor Graham and Carissa Speck also had long runs at the service line as ACHS hit 24 of 25 serve attempts.

Campus took the match, however, on Ark City attack errors as the Colts chipped away. The Bulldogs staved off two match points before Morgan Jennings hammered a kill for the win.

Ashley Carter led Ark City with five kills, while Swope and Kelsey Stewart had four apiece. Carissa Speck and Taylor Hatfield offered seven assists each and Samantha Turned put up a pair of blocks.

Despite their winless record, the Vikings put up a battle in both matches. Winfield had two game points in the first game against Ark City before three consecutive hitting errors allowed Ark City to escape with the win.

"We're still working on it," said Stewart, a freshman. "(I) try to pump up the team and tell them we can do it."

Swope took the ball in the second game and the Bulldogs nursing a 9-8 lead, and before she was finished, the Ark City sophomore reeled off six straight winners including four aces - three in a row at one point.

Winfield actually out-hit the Bulldogs 10-8 at the net, but Ark City made 26 of 27 service tries and fired six aces in the game.

"Confidence," Swope said. "I believed that we could beat Winfield and we did. I was excited."

Samantha Turner led the Ark City offense with five kills, while Erin Griffiths had four kills and three blocks to lead Winfield.

"We were all working as a team and had some confidence," Stewart said. "We were like, 'We can beat them, so let's just do it.'"

Because the Arkansas City Invitational was canceled due to the recent floods, the Bulldogs added a quad on their schedule for 4 p.m. Sept. 30 in the ACHS gymnasium. Andover Central, El Dorado and Winfield will take part.

Bulldogs go 2-3 at Mulvane

The Lady Bulldogs went to three games in all five matches at Saturday's Mulvane Invitational, defeating Winfield 21-25, 25-17, 25-17 and South Haven 25-23, 19-25, 25-19 and losing to Augusta 25-14, 20-25, 25-22, Conway Springs 15-25, 25-19, 25-19 and Mulvane 25-22, 17-25, 25-18.

"We really did have a good tournament over the weekend," Hollis said. "We saw a lot of good things happen."

Turner registered six kills against Mulvane, while Stewart had four in the COnway Springs match. The Bulldogs hammered a season-high 14 kills against South Haven.

Ark City was masterful at the service line against Winfield, reeling off 17 aces. Hatfield, Carter and Graham had four apiece.

Graham led the defense with 15 digs in three straight matches and pulling up 14 in another. Carter had 10 digs against Conway Springs.

The Bulldogs head to Haysville for Saturday's Campus Invitational.

"A lot of our younger kids (are) coming around and starting to play good ball for us," Hollis said. "I'm looking forward to this weekend. They've had that tournament experience now and hopefully are ready to go."
