Broncos thrash Elk Valley
LONGTON -- The Cedar Vale defense got it started. The Ridgeway brothers did most of the damage the rest of the way.
The Broncos recorded two non-offensive touchdowns in the first quarter to lead Cedar Vale to a 62-28 spanking of the Elk Valley Lions in South Central Border League 8-man football action Friday night at Longton.
The loss was costly for the Broncos, who had several injuries as the night wore on.
"Mason and Trevor Ridgeway were both injured in the first half and played very limited roles in the second half," Cedar Vale coach Lee Odell said. "Gage Rose had a limited role the entire night due to a pulled muscle in his back. These three showed a lot of pride and determination and came in the game to make key plays when we needed them the most."
Trevor Ridgeway had 167 yards and one touchdown on 13 carries while brother Mason Ridgeway gained 126 yards and three touchdowns on 12 carries to lead the Cedar Vale offense.
The Broncos jumped out to a 28-0 first-quarter lead, with Logan Snyder returning an interception 32 yards to paydirt to get the ball rolling. Travis Jarboe blocked a punt and Mason Ridgeway returned it 18 yards for the second score of the game.
Colby Taglialatela gained 137 yards on the ground and scored two touchdowns on 15 carries as the Broncos (2-2) piled up 562 yards on the ground. Mason Ridgeway scored TDs on runs of 55, 37 and 12 yards, while Trevor Ridgeway added a 64-yard TD run to start the second half.
Freshman Brett Champlin took over at quarterback for starter COlby Taglialatela and completed 4 of 6 passes for 39 yards for Cedar Vale.
"Brett had seen limited action in varsity up to this point, but stepped in the game and played with confidence, leading his team to victory in the final quarters of the game," Odell said. "The only other freshman on the team, Jake McCall, who has also seen limited varsity action up to this point, played a monster of a game. He played wherever I asked him to, which ended up being offensive line, defensive line, linebacker and even fullback."
Jarboe, Mason Ridgeway, Jake McCall and Parker Massey led the defense with 12 tackles apiece. Josh Stone had 11 tackles, Clint Kennedy added nine tackles to go with an interception, while Trevor Ridgeway recorded eight tackles.
The Broncos return home Friday to take on South Haven.
"It was nice to get a big win, but we have a lot of things to work on," Odell said. "We will focus on getting healthy this week, and preparing for our home game against a very tough South Haven team."
