Fun Barn hosts old-time jamboree

The Mud Bugs will perform at the Fun Barn's Old-Time Music Festival Oct. 9-11

SPECIAL to the TRAVELER

Just southeast of Winfield, a few miles out of town, there's a unique place known as the Quail Valley Farm Park and Fun Barn, which is the setting for the Old-Time Music Festival running Oct. 9-11. Performers will gather to share country, cowboy and Cajun music with anyone who enjoys these diverse styles of old-time music.

Two stages, one in the Fun Barn and another an outdoor stage called the Railcar Stage, will feature concerts, theme shows, open stages and showcases throughout the weekend. A Wednesday evening open stage show will feature amateur entertainers from the area performing their music for early festival attendees. Organizers encourage area entertainers to showcase their music during two Thursday-evening showcase shows. Thursday-Saturday Theme shows begin at 10 a.m.; concerts begin at 1 p.m., followed by dinner at 5 p.m. Evening concerts begin at 7.

A Combo Festival Pass covers all days and is $40; day passes are $15 each day; $5 general admission for Wednesday night.

Thursday-Saturday evenings are $8 each. Discounts for seniors, 62 and over; and kids, 16 under. Kids 11 and under are free with parents. Tickets are available at the gate.

Floid McCord, owner of the Fun Barn, has an eccentric style and loves to share it with guests.

Featured performers for this first-ever festival include Schiff & Co., headed by Daryl Schiff, country singer Martina McBride's dad; Tex and Mary Schutz, country singers from Texas; the Mud Bugs, a Cajun group from Wichita; Jake Simpson and Chelsea Beck, two talented teenagers from Oklahoma who perform cowboy, country, fiddling and yodeling songs; Bill Craven, a Hank Snow-type singer of old country songs, Bob and Barb Lewis of Missouri who perform a blend of bluegrass and old-timey music; and Curt Shoemaker, the current Kansas State Steel Guitar champion.

Young performers, aged 16 or younger, are invited to call for a spot on the special "Spotlight on Young Entertainers," on Saturday from 1- 2 p.m. Youngsters should have two selections ready to perform and may have accompaniment. Call ahead to reserve time slots. Unbooked bands or performance groups are invited to perform during one of the festival's showcases.

Those interested in showcasing should call ahead to arrange their time (903) 467-9545. Food will be available throughout the weekend, as well as RV sites with electricity.

To reach the Fun Barn from Highway 77 on the south edge of Winfield, turn east on County Road 27, then right on South Pike Road/85th St. -- the road runs south between the Super 8 and Comfort Inn motels. Continue south for about one mile to 194th Drive until you see the large boot sign.

For more information call (620) 222 2154, (620) 221-0052 or (903) 467-9545.
