Art is Ageless winners announced

Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America is pleased to announce the winners of the 27th Annual Art is Ageless calendar competition.

A total of 77 entries were submitted for judging for the Presbyterian Manors system of 17 communities.

Since the first calendar was produced in 1980 for the 1981 calendar year, more than 675 pieces of art from nearly 400 artists have been recognized.

* Dorothy Brinkman won Best of Show for her quilting entry entitled Be Happy. On the corporate level, Brinkman's entry will be featured on an anniversary card.

* JoAnn Shedon won first place in the photography category.

* Nellie Hite won first place in the needlework category with her quilt entitled Don't Fence Me In.

* Jean Stockton won first place in painting Brook at Ramblewood.

* Cleo Graves won first place for her entry entitled Kansas Sunflowers.

* Evelyn McKelvy won first place in fiber arts with her entry entitled Reader's Wrap.

"Thanks to everyone who participated. It is always a pleasure to see the art come in and to set up the exhibit," said Margaret Wahlborg. She and Abby Dickey were marketing coordinator's for the exhibit.

All locally judged exhibits were open to artists 65 and older throughout the areas that Presbyterian Manors serve.

Works exhibited for judging must have been created in the past five years to promote the expanded mission of Art is Ageless to develop active arts programs throughout the Manor system.

Artists had the option of exhibiting only. This year's Art is Ageless competition began in late July and throughout August with judged exhibits at all 17 locations in the Presbyterian Manor system.

First-place winners from these competitions were submitted for judging at the corporate level.

"We were pleased with community response and the inclusion of the greater community has re-energized Art is Ageless as it moves into its next quarter century," said Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America Corporate Director of Marketing Leslie Chaffin.

The Spirit of Art is Ageless Award is a special award that began with the competition's 25th anniversary. The Spirit of Art is Ageless honors a Presbyterian Manor resident who embodies the pursuit of the arts throughout their retirement years.

This year's Spirit of Art is Ageless award winners are Vera Hamm, of Dodge City, and Mary Kessler of Newton. Runner-up for the award is Frances Reber, of Topeka.

Local judges were: Ellen Snell, Arkansas City Area Art Center; Kim Ebert, Brown's; and Denise Sweet, local artist.

Photography was taken for the winners by V.J. Sherring.

Judging the system competition was Leslie Pryzbylek, curator of humanities exhibits for the Mid-America Arts Alliance in Kansas City, Mo.

Pryzbylek has been involved with the arts and humanities for more than 15 years. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art and Art History from Gettysburg College and an Master of Arts degree in Art History from the University of Delaware.

The 2008 Art is Ageless Calendar will showcase 12 works with four runner-up pieces represented on postcards on the back cover. Pryzbylek selected nine works for honorable mention.

In addition, works to be featured on the annual Christmas card, birthday card and note cards also were chosen. Works were also selected for an anniversary card and sympathy card.
