Frisbee battles return to Winfield

By DONETTA GODSEY
Staff Writer

Don't think all the tents and tie-dyed shirts are gone from the Winfield Fairgrounds. The Walnut Valley Festival may be over, but it's now time for round two of the fun -- Oktoberfriz.

This is the 19th year the Frisbee golf tournament has been held in Winfield. According to the former Winfield resident Raymond Carr, about 225-250 people will compete in the tournament this year.

"I think during the 10th anniversary of the tournament, there were almost 500 players," said Carr, who now resides in Colorado Springs, Colo.

There are several levels of play in the tournament including novice, amateur I and advanced amateur II, and open (pro).

"There is also a women's division and amateur masters and open masters for players 35 years and older," Carr said.

At noon Friday, some players were preparing for lunch, but many were still out in their golf carts practicing on one of the four courses.

"With 72 holes (on the four courses), you never have to play the same hole twice," said Carr.

While Matt and Rachel Christensen from Springfield, Mo., were off practicing, their dog was being entertained back at the campsite. Harvey the dog and a young woman, giving her name only as Mouse, were busy playing a game of Frisbee catch. Harvey's a 1 1/2 year old standard poodle and like most dogs, he loves to catch and fetch. But Harvey is somewhat eye-catching himself, decked out in his blue checkerboard fur with lime-green ears and tail pom. He's an unusual sight, but a good Frisbee player.

Mouse, a hemp artist from Manitou Springs, Colo., had her display of handmade hemp accessories including belts, bracelets and necklaces set up at the campsite. She commented that most of the good pieces were already sold.

When asked if she also plays Frisbee golf, Mouse smiled and replied, "No, I'm just the cheerleader."

The tournament officially starts tomorrow and continues through the weekend. The finals of the open competition will take place at approximately 1 p.m. Sunday.

"That's when you can see some of the best players," said Carr.

Maybe you can catch a glimpse of Harvey, too.
