Broncos destroy Dexter

DEXTER -- The Cedar Vale Broncos jumped out to a 20-point halftime lead and never looked back Friday, defeating the Dexter Cardinals 62-16 in an 8-man II District 4 contest.

The game ended with 4:21 remaining in the fourth quarter due to the 45-point rule.

"The guys played a tremendous game tonight," Cedar Vale coach Lee Odell said.

It is the next-to-last time the two teams will meet before they combine their football teams into one. The rest of the sports programs already have combined.

Mason Ridgeway scored five touchdowns for the Broncos (3-3, 1-1 in District 4), including one on a 79-yard interception return. He finished with 156 rushing yards on 14 carries and also threw a 40-yard touchdown pass to Logan Snyder.

Quarterback Brett Champlin scored on a 3-yard run and threw a 26-yard TD pass to Tyler Ridgeway. Champlin finished 8 of 15 for 93 yards.

"Freshmen Brett Champlin and Jake McCall continued to improve and both had incredible games in their second consecutive varsity starts," Odell said. "Those two have matured tremendously over the past couple weeks."

Trevor Ridgeway recorded 13 tackles and had an interception. He also recovered a fumble and blocked a punt. Mason Ridgeway led the defense with 16 tackles and two interceptions to go with a fumble recovery.

Cedar Vale returns home to face Caldwell (3-3, 0-2 in DIstrict 4) this weekend at Homecoming. Dexter (2-4, 0-2 in DIstrict 4) plays at South Haven.
