Battery on police officer charged after traffic stop
One person was charged with DUI and another with striking a police
officer after a traffic stop Friday.
Amanda Banja, of Arkansas City, was arrested for DUI after a vehicle
was reported driving in a field behind Kingdom Hall in the 2500 block
of North 15th Street. According to police reports, passenger Conrad
Gomez, of Winfield, was highly intoxicated and belligerent.
Gomez was taken into custody after an officer found a beer bottle
beside the vehicle. Gomez was placed in the patrol car. While
continuing with the investigation, Gomez began to bang his head on
the cage and window. He told officers he was going to be ill, so he
was taken out of the patrol car, but refused to get back in. Gomez
was forcibly placed in the patrol car where he continued to bang his
head.
Officers attempted to restrain him in a seatbelt. When the officer
opened the door, Gomez kicked the officer in the chest. He was then
transported directly to the Cowley County Jail with the assistance of
officers from the Cowley County Sheriff's Department.
Banja was charged with DUI and Gomez with illegal possession of
intoxicant, obstruction and battery on a law enforcement officer.
Both have bonded out and are awaiting court in Arkansas City.
Woman charged with alcohol violation
At approximately 4 a.m. Saturday, officers were sent to the 300 block
of North Eighth Street on a report of a disturbance.
Upon arrival, officers arrested Michael Alan Beach Jr., of Pratt,
for minor in consumption of alcohol. The homeowner, Marcia Russell,
of Arkansas City, was arrested for hosting and Warren Roy, of
Carnegie, Okla., was arrested on several 2003 Arkansas City Municipal
Bench warrants. Beach and Russell posted bond. Roy remains in the
Cowley County Jail.
Meth, paraphernalia charges filed
Drug charges were filed against Julio Gonzalesz after a traffic
stop at about 8 p.m. Friday.
A blue Chrysler New Yorker was stopped for driving without taillights
in the 1100 block of South Summit Street. While officers were
speaking with the driver, drug paraphernalia could be seen through
the passenger-side, front-door window. The driver, Julio Gonzalez,
was placed under arrest and placed in a patrol car. During the search
of the vehicle, a small baggie containing a white substance believed
to be methamphetamine was found.
Julio Gonzalez was charged with possession of methamphetamine and
possession of drug paraphernalia, and was transported to the Cowley
County Jail.
Damage to vehicle reported
An Arkansas City woman witnessed an unknown male subject throw a rock
at her vehicle sometime last week, causing damage to her windshield
and hood. There are no suspects at this time.
Man charged with rape of child
On Oct. 24, a report was made to SRS that a 6-year-old female victim
stated that her step-father had sexually assaulted her.
During the course of the investigation, the victim stated she had
been raped by the suspect at two locations in Arkansas City.
Arkansas City police detectives interviewed the suspect and
investigated the facts surrounding the report.
The result of the investigation ended with the charging of Jorge
Recinos-Rivas, 42, of Arkansas City, for rape and aggravated indecent
liberties with a child. He was later transported to the Cowley County
Jail. His bond was set at $12,500.00.
Motorcyclist injured after hitting car
At 6:32 p.m. Nov. 1, an injury motor vehicle accident was reported
at Seventh Avenue and Main in Winfield.
Upon investigation, it was determined that a 1982 Suzuki motorcycle,
driven by Kent D. Walker, of Winfield, was northbound on Main Street
from Ninth Avenue. A 2006 Volkswagen Jetta, driven by Rebecca D.
Potter, of Wichita, was stopped on Seventh Avenue at Main Street,
waiting to turn south onto Main Street. Potter proceeded with the
turn and was struck in the driver's side of her vehicle by the
motorcycle. Walker, who was not wearing a helmet, was ejected from
the motorcycle and transported to the William Newton Hospital by
Winfield EMS. He was then transferred to Wesley Medical Center via
helicopter for treatment.
Multiple elements are being considered as possible contributing
factors to this accident. This investigation is ongoing.
The Kansas Highway patrol assisted with the accident investigation.
The Cowley County Sheriff's Department assisted with traffic control.
