Schools mail bond vote info

Arkansas City residents soon will receive a 10-page document from the local school district that will detail a proposed $36 million school improvement project, a district official said today.
The bond issue will go before voters in a mail-in election next March. Deadline for receiving ballots in the mail is set for March 4.
The question before voters will be whether or not to approve the issuing of $36 million in bonds to pay for the project that would include improvements to all elementary and secondary schools. In addition, it would include the building of a new sports complex next to Arkansas City High School.
"We are preparing an informational document that in the very near future will go out to all postal patrons in the district," USD 470 spokeswoman Alisha Call said.
The document will include an overview of projects, listed school by school, Call said. More detailed financial information also will be included.
"It will have the total estimated cost and what that means for citizens -- what comes out of your pockets and what comes out of the state's pocket," she said.
The document was developed by Call in collaboration with Schools Superintendent Ron Ballard, Associate Superintendent Jan Voss and Assistant Superintendent J.K. Campbell.
Plans for the March bond issue election were approved by the school board at its meeting Nov. 12.
The issue is not on the agenda for tonight's school board meeting, to be held at 7 p.m. at Roosevelt Elementary School. The meeting tonight contains discussion items only. No action items are on the agenda.
The discussion items include:
* A Roosevelt Elementary report by school Principal Tom Bauer and teachers.
* High school and middle school course descriptions of proposed new courses in art, foreign language, social studies, science, math, and health and introduction to athletic training.
* A report on an anti-bullying plan. A state statute requires implementation by school districts of such a plan on or before Jan. 1, 2008.
* Discussion of the 2008-2009, and 2009-2010 school calendars.
