Several deer killed by cars in county

The gun deer hunting season opens tomorrow, and runs through Dec. 9. Several deer have already been killed in accidents involving automobiles.
Last week was rough for deer and the drivers who couldn't avoid them. Beginning Nov. 19, there were 19 deer/car accidents on Cowley County roads, according to sheriff's reports.
"It's the rutting season (for deer)," said Sheriff Bob Odell. "The accidents are much more prominent than other times. People need to be on guard this time of year, especially in the evenings."
One of the accidents happened to a sheriff's officer, Bruce Hafenstein, while he was in his patrol car on Saturday at K-15 and 211th Road.
On Nov. 19, deer/car incidents happened with Kandi Rich, Arkansas City, at Cowley 4 and 31st Road, and Karolyn Cook, Newton, at K-15 and 41st.
On Tuesday, car/deer collisions happened to Gennifer Whitford, Arkansas City, at 252nd and 51st Road, John Glass, Burden, at U.S. 160 and 311th Road, and Wilma Thorne, Killeen, Texas, at U.S. 166 and 41st Road
On Wednesday, deer/car incidents happened involving Jeremy Lee Young, Augusta, at U.S. 77 and Cowley 4, and Jose Valencia Jr., Atlanta, at U.S. 160 and 152nd.
On Thursday, a deer/car incident occurred with Melvin Chapman, Arkansas City, at 61st Road and 242nd Road.
Friday, Aaron J. Fry II, Universal City, Texas, hit a deer at U.S. 77 and 81st Road; Trecid Alford, Douglass, at U.S. 77 and 332nd Road; Mary Cramer, El Dorado, at U.S. 77 and 82nd Road; and Paul Wayne Kelly, Grainola, Okla., at K-15 and U.S. 166
On Saturday, deer/car incidents happened involving Bruce Hafenstein, Winfield, at K-15 and 211th Road and Patrick Ware, Arkansas City, at 242nd and 11th Road.
On Sunday, there were four deer/car incidents involving Mark Jones, Burden, at U.S. 160 and 151st, Angela Moore, Augusta, at U.S. 77 and 52nd, Cindy Shore, Winfield, at U.S. 77 and 206th Road, and Brandy Brown, Arkansas City, at U.S. 160 and 151st Road.
Early today, Holli Freeland, Winfield, hit a deer at U.S. 77 and 82nd Road.
