Filing period begins for next election

By ROY GRABER
Courier Editor

With one election just behind us, another is soon to come.

Numerous city and school offices will be decided this spring. Candidates can now file for office and have nearly two months to do so.

"They can file any time between now and noon on Jan. 27," said Karen Brooks, Cowley County clerk and elections officer.

Should enough candidates come forward to require a primary election, it will be held March 3. The general election will take place April 7.

The Winfield City Commission will have two seats up for election. They are currently being held by Mike Ledy and Tom McNeish. Both are at-large positions. The person obtaining the most votes is elected to a four-year term, and the candidate who comes in second gets a two-year term.

All other cities within the county will also have elections. Three Arkansas City Commission positions -- currently held by Scott Margolius, Patrick McDonald and Joel Hockenbury -- will be decided. The top two in the at-large election get four-year terms, and the person coming in third will get a two-year term.

Atlanta will elect three city council members. W. Dennis King, Veronica Bohrer and Lawrence Edgar Clark were elected to those positions four years ago.

Burden will also vote for three council members. Those positions are now filled by Kyle Wham, Jerry Stover and Duane L. Wingert Jr.

Parkerfield will name its mayor and two council members. Michael Bergagnini is the current mayor, and Dorothy Milliron and Deuane Wells hold the council seats that are opening.

Udall will also have a mayor and two council seats on the ballot. Chris Lette is the current mayor, and Mary Hilderbrand and Janette Adams hold the council seats.

Dexter and Cambridge will vote for mayor and their entire councils. All terms are for two years.

School board races

The Winfield board of education will have three seats open. Those seats are presently filled by Julie Thompson, Lyle Weinert and Vic McClung. All positions are at-large.

Arkansas City also has three school board openings, as Darren Reese, Joe Woodard and Joelyn Squires finish out their terms.

Positions 4, 5 and 6 on the Central, Udall and Dexter boards of education are also going to be on the ballot. All elected will serve for four years. The opening seats at Central are presently held by Connie Redford, David Taylor and Denise Wheeler.

John Muntz, Bill Pudden and Steve Powell hold them at Dexter.

Shonda Green, Joseph Leiblie and Charles Smith are the Udall board members whose seats are up for election.

The one entity that all registered voters in Cowley County can vote for is the Cowley County Community College Board of Trustees. The four-year positions held by Albert Bacastow Jr., Donna Avery and LaDonna Lanning are up for grabs.

Brooks said as of Tuesday afternoon, nobody had filed for any position at her office.
