Police confiscate $10,000 in drugs

From STAFF REPORTS

More than 10 pounds of marijuana and small amounts of substances believed to be cocaine and a drug called ecstasy were recovered early Friday in a drug raid of two Arkansas City area residences, police said.

Street value of the marijuana is $10,000, police said. If an ounce of white powder recovered in the raid proves to be cocaine, it would be worth $600 to $700.

Three adults -- two males and a female -- were arrested without incident on drug-related charges, police said. They were being held at the Cowley County Jail.

Also recovered in the raid were three rifles and a shotgun, some ammunition, a smoking device known as a bong, and thousands of dollars in cash, police said.

Members of the Cowley County Drug Task Force executed two search warrants at the houses early this morning, said Cpl. Eric Mata, of the Arkansas City Police Department. One house was south of Arkansas City, just outside the city limits, and the other was in the northeast part of town.

The task force was assisted by the Ark City Police, Cowley County Sheriff's Department, Kansas Highway Patrol, and Augusta Department of Public Safety. The Augusta department provided a K-9 unit -- one dog -- trained to detect drugs, Mata said.

Police declined to release the names of the suspects pending further investigation of the case, Mata said.

The recovered substances will be sent to a Kansas Bureau of Investigation laboratory for testing, he said.
